Hi!
I found a tiny portion of a colony of Ponera pennsylvanica while reconstructing my terrarium. It has four workers and one female alate (might be mated). I also happen to have a Ponera pennsylvanica queen, and I've been thinking about introducing her to the others. Should I fuse the two colonies or should I keep my queen separate?
NOTE: I put one of the workers with the single queen to see the reaction and they got along fine.

A couple weeks back I happened to stumble across a P. pennsylvanica nuptial flight. I managed to snag a queen, and have been keeping her in a test tube setup. She doesn't have any eggs yet, but she's still alive, so that's something.

Same. I think that Ponera queens lay in the spring.
Hmm I'm not sure, I heard that pinerine ant workers can accept queens...You could try gping back and collecting more workers and hoepfully establish a gamergate...
Keep us updated on how it works, by the way!
Thanks. I'm not sure if I want a gamer gate colony, though, because I don't want too many males.

Ok, to clarify, Stigmatomma and Ponera don't have gamergates. Also, the only succesful attempts with lone Ponera and Stigmatomma were with helper workers.

MegaMyrmex apparently has a gamer gate colony of Ponera pennsylvanica, though.

The Ponera queen is now with the wild workers, and they are doing very well.

I don't know if it was a gamergate or not, all i know was that i saw a little pile of eggs and none of the ants looked queen- like. Perhaps I was wrong but the colony is gone now since they all died when I moved them into a test tube setup...These guys don't seem to do well in a test tube setupI knew it!

My colony is doing fine in their custom test tube (fashioned from a rubber plug and a drinking straw)
