Hi!
Yesterday I went to the beach on a quest to find Maritime Earwigs, but instead I found a bunch of ants, bees, and myrmecophiles. I ended up keeping one Bumblebee(queen?) and two myrmecophilic isopods (I lost them both ). I also saw several interesting ants, most of which should not normally occur in CT. Here they are:
Linepithema humile, running on fencepost
Polyergus montivagus, scouting workers
A large and fairly large headed Myrmica sp, building up a small anthill
An odd Ponerine that was fairly large and elongated, sort of like Hypoponera, nesting under rocks in groups of 3-4
Any idea what they were doing there? I know that L. humile is tropical, so maybe it hitchhiked over and will die over the winter.
