Ants detect CO2 and air movement from large mammals breathing as an immediate threat, and enter an alarm state. A snorkel redirects breathing in a different direction, so you can watch your ants up close without them freaking out. Full face masks aren't necessary. You only need something to force your breathing away from the ants you're observing. Vinyl tubing also works, but the small diameter would make breathing difficult.

Ooh, that snorkel would come in handy when cleaning my C. chromaiodes colony. I can swim in the formic acid they make.
