The cutest little queens are flying right now. I only noticed because I am sitting out the back, reading the forums and getting drunk and they keep landing on my mobile phone screen.
It is as if they are like "hey, how you doing? I see that monster formicarium you are making.... may I move in?" And I just like *squish* "too small!"

What. Waste of queens detected. Maybe next time drop them into a package towards me or Drew. Ok, no joke I either did not understand what I read, or I am/ should be sad.

they are everywhere!
I did not actually *squish* em. Was for comedic flair.. also the conversation did not take place either. I am just not interested in this species.
Upon closer inspection of my porch.. there are hundreds of them.. I might fill a test tube of them.. for science.

I already have snow deep enough that I have to wear boots instead of shoes and you have ants flying around.....
Can we trade?

A boot for an ant? Sure 😆

Don't tempt me on that one. I have a few spare boots.
Or maybe you can come up here and shovel some snow. I will even buy you a few bottles if you want to shovel snow.

Amazingly hot day here. It's over 60F. Weather forecast says it's going down to 37F tomorrow tho.

Haha, there's actually some really cool tiny species.

Those appear to be males anyway...

Males? 😠well they are useless then. Amiright crystals? Nudge.
#11 Offline - Posted November 24 2014 - 1:40 PM
A lot of times the males are WAY smaller than the queens, so that species may be more interesting than you thought.

The females usually appear an hour or so after the males start showing up.
Honestly I cannot tell if those are males or not. In the first picture, the top one looks like it has a small head and is a male, but the one just beneath it looks like it has a larger head.
Most males I see are pure black. I would need a closer picture

Along the same lines of this thread, now that Socal is finally getting some rain and the weather is relatively mild, what are the chances of flights? Maybe Crematogaster or Myrmica?
Edited by Foogoo, December 1 2014 - 10:38 AM.
Camponotus vicinus, Crematogaster 1, Crematogaster 2, Formica francoeuri, *, *, Myrmecocystus testaceus, Novomessor cockerelli, Pheidole hyatti, Pogonomyrmex californicus, Pogonomyrmex rugosus, Solenopsis invicta

In December? I'm gonna go with zero. In January there is a chance that Prenolepis imparis could fly.

They look like they could be male Pheidole.

See Matt? If they are indeed Pheidole, then they ARE an interesting small species. Even though they're tiny, everybody loves Pheidole.
