Another one from last month that I haven't posted. Thanks!

 

1. Location of collection: Glamis, California

2. Date of collection: 8/22/2017

3. Habitat of collection: Desert with shrubs

4. Length (from head to gaster): 11mm

5. Color, hue, pattern and texture: Red head and thorax, black gaster.

6. Distinguishing characteristics: N/A

7. Distinguishing behavior: Flew to a blacklight setup and was the only one of the species that showed up. No egg laying or anything so far (after a month).

8. Nest description: N/A

Looks like some sort of Camponotus, maybe C. disoclor.

Yeah, it's weird lookin'. It's head and eyes are peculiarly shaped too; I was thinking some sort of Colobopsis, but Camponotus does seem more accurate.

Wow that's one I haven't found yet. I thought it looked like that species more than any other Camponotus, but didn't think it could be since I don't see a single record on Antweb from the desert.

 

Edit: After looking at all the records, I do see some from the desert. I shouldn't have only checked the map.

 

Its eyes remind me of Pogonomyrmex magnacanthus too.

Yeah, neither have I. Interesting find. She looks parasitic, but don't think there are any Camponotus here that are?
