Hello! I'll be using this thread to post photos of local ants I come across

28th September 2017

I took these photos in my backyard today.

~2mm minors ~4-5mm major

 

 

 

This is another hole about a metre away, with lots of dead ants around it?

 

Not sure if these guys are the same species, these majors are ~3mm

These are taken in my yard.

#1 and #2 What looks like a dead centipede being swarmed. 3-4mm workers

#3 Dead beetle along the line to the centipede

#4 and #5 Nest entrance to "Green Ant" nest. Not sure of the ID. 8-9mm workers

Bushland near my house.

These were with my phone so not amazing quality.

#1 I believe this is a meat ant nest. I can remember this nest being here as far back as 14-15 years.

 

#2 nest entrance

#3 9mm worker

#4 11mm worker

#5 there was a fight happening between some meat ants and this much smaller species. Looked like the small guys were winning.

#6 Termites ~4mm workers

#7 and #8 This is a new species to me, really nice gold on them! 2-3mm

#9 11-12mm

 

#10 #11 This was the first really big species of the day 16-17mm

#12 #13 #14 These girls were scary to be around. Very aware I was there. Around 20-25mm!

#15 This is one area I was in. Definitely a fire recently and the reason for the blackened ground.

8 October 2017 - Coastal Bushland

#1 and #2 ~11mm I've never personally seen this type of ant before. Beautiful black, slight purple?

#3 Meat Ant nest/mound roughly 1.5m in diameter. You do not want to be standing at the top of this. Very aggressive when agitated. Saw a few other nests that looked inactive on the surface as well.

#4 Meat Ant nest entrance. Workers ~8-9mm Definitely a staple of my anting experiences. Tempted to hunt for a queen some day.

#5 and #6 Banded Sugar Ant? Unsure. ~12mm

#7 and #8 ~4mm Very oddly shaped, I think there are spines on it. Wish I got nicer photos of these.

#1 ~12mm I've done some googling and this looks like Myrmecia fulvipes

Yup. Even the ants in Australia are going to kill me. They are some gnarly lookin' buggers. Thank you for goin' out and taking nice pictures of the different species.

11 October 2017 - Local Bushland

#1 ~8mm

#2 and 3 ~5mm These were the most shiny/metallic looking ants I have ever seen! My photos don't do them justice.

 

19 October 2017 - Local Bushland

#1 ~7mm They seemed to be very interested in this crack in the tree next to a termite tunnel. New species for me.
