I found an ant nest in my backyard, and I want to dig it up and catch the ants inside. I have a few questions:

1. What species is it? I have a YouTube video depicting it at a link at the bottom of this paragraph. I live in California in the Bay Area. This video was taken at dusk, so the ant might not be the exact same color.

2. How do I excavate an ant nest safely, and capture as many ants as possible? What is the best, most efficient, and safe for the ants way?

1. Prenolepis imparis(maybe-ish)

2. I don't recommend digging into their nest, and we would need more info about their nest to tell you how to excavate it.

I accidentally froze all my ants

Yeah don't try digging up thir nests. They are about 6 or 7 feet underground and they are going to hce nuptial flights soon anyway.

Proverbs 6:6-8 New International Version (NIV)

Go to the ant, you sluggard;
    consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
    no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
    and gathers its food at harvest.

Since, I'm pretty sure those are Prenolepis Imparis, they won't be flying until next spring. :P But yeah, digging up nests rarely work. This just always ends in a mess and people end up letting them go again in a few days/weeks. Also you won't be getting the queen either. Much to difficult to find them.
