Well, hmmm. At least I am learning more of the "look" of various species. Also learning about collecting! Thanks for replies!

1.caught: ~ 40 miles NE of Barstow, CA

2. time: 11 sep (today)

3. Mojave Desert:  grass/sand/rock, found on a building top, seeking moisture in cracks/under some boards

4. 8-9mm

5. glossy black

6. close as I can tell with the wings, one petiole

7. quite active

8. nests in area seem to be typical harvester types, lots of dark red ants, a couple large colonies of a small black harvester type.

Yep, agree that this is a male ant as well.  Not sure on species, maybe Pogonomyrmex?

It looks like you have caught what seems to be a Veromessor male alate.
