Why does my Camponotus castaneus colony's test tube always smell like garbage? This has happened twice. Is this good or bad? Please help me!
Proverbs 6:6-8 New International Version (NIV)
6 Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise!
7 It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
8 yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.

well... as long as it is not really potent and just gagging smell you should be fine. It means that there are bacteria.
Aphaenogaster cf. rudis
Tetramorium immigrans
Tapinoma sessile
Formica subsericea
Pheidole sp.
Camponotus nearcticus

it means things are decaying. It shouldn't be harmful for your ants.
It's just as bad as the bacteria on you're skin. You don't have to worry.
I know a little about organic chemistry. What is proably the smell that you're smelling is Thiol which is produced by certain kinds of bacteria.

I took Organic Chemistry on Khan Academy so i relatively know about this stuff

Tapinoma sessile
