I have a lot of leftover lego from childhood. Wonder if I could make a cheap formicarium out of that? I do have glass panes.

Hm.. This really made me think. I wonder if I can make an efficient formicarium out of them. Have multiple cases in storage that I could get out.

A question that sometimes drives me hazy: am I or are the others crazy?

Sure - the tough part would be putting a panel over the top, as the nubs on the top of the legos will create gaps, but as long as you can solve that it should be fine IMO.

I have got to try this ...

Proverbs 6:6-8 New International Version (NIV)

Go to the ant, you sluggard;
    consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
    no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
    and gathers its food at harvest.

I'm not sure about a nest but they can make a good mold for hydrostone, grout, etc. nests as seen here: http://www.anthillwo...p?pageid=380430

You can make a groove running all around that the plate of glass sits in and put flat, smooth pieces over the top of the pieces making the groove

Ah I see - that makes sense.

Do you know how you'd connect the outworld?

I'd imagine that it could be hydrated like the Antscanada hybrid nests. Perhaps you could use the plate pieces with holes in them on the bottom of the formicarium and glue mesh under that to make sure that small ants do not escape. Then make a tray that the whole thing sits on and that holds wet cotton balls.
