Pinning this thread would be a great idea. It sure is helpful to know this stuff.

Mineral Oil

Olive Oil

Formica

Myrmica

Tapinoma (spread thick they tend to drown, but if spread very thinly over a 1" wide band, they don't seem to want to cross it)

Camponotus

Lasius

Once this list gets bigger, we can make the first post a summary, so people won't have to read through 3 pages.

It might just be me, but olive oil worked well with my Camponotus pennsylvanicus colony, no escapes (though maybe they just didn't try)

Olive Oil:

Formica Podzolica

I applied a one inch band. I started finding ants crawling on my walls just a few hours after I applied the band.

Queens I keep:

Camponotus sp.

Formica sp.

Unknown queen ant sp.

1 parasitic Formica queen!

I guess I should add to this the fact my Tetramorium ATE their olive oil barrier with incredible enthusiasm.

Tapinoma melanocephalum: fluon, baby powder rubbing alcohol, olive oil, Vaseline, f*cking sealed lids and anything else you can think of. If you somehow find a way to contain them, they will try to chew their way out of their setup. It’s not fun.
