20 years prison time. Wonder if the punishment would be similar with ants? Maybe like the more dangerous species like bullet ants.

Interesting.  I would imagine a lot of the potential jail time would be tied to the Endangered Species Act violation they reference.  That and the mortal threat to the agents.

This could have had very serious results.

I was talking over this with a friend of mine and we just can't figure out WHY in the first place?

The cobras they imported are very commonly (and LEGALLY) sold in a large number of states.

The turtles are a little more rare but as far as I know you can sometimes find albino spiny softshell turtles at a few of the large asian markets in SoCal...must be similar elsewhere.

That's pretty funny. I could imagine how serious the results would have been if the package had broken open during any phase of shipment. If anyone were to be bitten by the snakes, they would have had to ID the snake, and then locate the nearest anti-venom. This is also a huge issue considering that unless the cobra is native to the location of were the bite took place, you're only going to find the anti-venom in zoos that may have that species.

*Could face up to 20 years... probably will just get fined for it.  That's probably the maximum that someone can get for illegally importing animals and they just went with that.

These snakes were almost certainly put down for that very reason.
