Location and measurements?
Length is about 1cm give or take 1mm - found in midlands UK (middle of a street )

Well you seem to have set me off in the right direction I'm leaning towards formica fusca which would be a good find. I was worried in case it was one of the parasitic ants, I didn't want to have it in a test tube for weeks because of my ignorance.

Yeah, I was gonna say F. fusca too.
