Hello everyone, I traded some queens for this Amblyopone australis queen and will be journaling her growth. I received her today and she is massive, well compared to my tiny ants haha. Also if you have any tips on raising this species I'd really appreciate them

Here's some pics

Cool, queens are semiclaustral so provide a foraging area!

Yep, I've put her into a small plastic container with a small bit of sand in the corner if she wants to use it for something. I have also wrapped her tube in black paper so its nice and dark for her. She hasn't showed too much interest in insects yet.

UPDATE 22/07/17

So nothing much has happened in the Amblyopone household, she hasn't laid any eggs but she destroyed a spider I gave her last night. Her test tube is literally covered in insect bits, so it seems like she doesn't like to clean.

UPDATE 5/8/17
Still nothing much has happened, she has no eggs. I've had to move her into a small test tube because her old one was getting moldy due to all those insect parts she left inside the tube. She seems to be a little more lazy and isn't really moving around too much, she hasn't eaten for about 5 or 6 days so hopefully she'll eat soon. Does anyone know if Amblyopone drink sugar water?

Try putting a tiny toothpick of honey in the tube. I would also recommend feeding small crickets rather than spiders.

Congrats on getting her! Amblyopone is definitely one of the coolest species!

Thanks, I will try feed her honey and see if she accepts it. It's winter right now so I can't find any crickets.

Try to buy some crickets from the pet store.

Here is a video of her, you can very easily see her egg. I was surprised at how big the egg was.

Yeah, semi claustral queens have huge eggs. My old Pseudomyrmex Gracilis queen had an egg that was almost the size of her head!

UPDATEUPDATEUPDATE I have an S. Pallipes queen so they're both related. I should also note that that might not be an egg but actually a larvae because of its shape...

Congrats on catching her! I'm pretty sure that's an egg because when I first noticed it in her test tube it looked exactly like that. Sadly I think she has eaten 1 of her eggs, she now has 1 left. And her tube is pretty dirty with insect parts so I can't get a good look at her or get pictures.
