Queen 1:

1. Vancouver (Coquitlam) BC Canada, July 9th 2017.

3. Edge of a brick driveway, near an asphalt road.

5. All Black and quite dull, lines on gaster, with golden tips on each leg

6. One petiole node, queen is quite short but has quite a lot of girth in proportion to her length.

Queen 2:

1. Vancouver (Port Moody) BC Canada, July 9th 2017

2. July 8th

3. Grassy area between a concrete sidewalk and an asphalt road.

4. 10mm

5. All black and dull, a shiny black bands on gaster, she also has golden tips on her legs

6. One petiole node, slimmer than the previous queen but still has the general body shape of a claustral queen.

First one is a Lasius queen. Probably Lasius alienus based on the time of year, but you never know.

 

The second one is a Formica queen.

I would say Lasius alienus as well for the first one, there was a flight in Ambler, Pennsylvania here as well!
