Gamergates are reproductive workers. All of the workers in a colony have the potential to mate and lay viable eggs.

We dug up the myrmecia nigrocincta nest this afternoon. We got around 500 workers and the queen! I didn't get stung at all! Pics incoming.

That is why I joked about asking for workers. ^.^

Posted Image poor quality photo. But this is myrmecia nigrocincta clustering around a 10mm (internal diameter) pipe.

What part of Australia are you in if you don't mind me asking? I myself am in the hunter region NSW, and have been having a hard time trying to find some Myrmecia. Are they flying at the moment?

I am on the central coast Ara. I ahve not seen them flying, never even seen one where I live. I would imagine that this species would be exterminated in any built up area. I collected this colony intact from the wild (which is apparently frowned upon :-( .. )

Yes greg. They can climb the glass. I had a few escapees but I think I have them under control now.

This is not my colony, I am just holding it for a mate who I helped dig it up. I am going to go find mine next week once I get their nest finished.

The queen has been pumping out eggs like a mad thing sunce she was collected. I feel confident that my mate will have a good, strong pet colony.

It is frowned upon, but it is not really a problem unless you are digging up a colony whenever you feel like it. ;)

Well, I felt like it.. and ill feel like it again this week. I want a colony of these ants and the ground is the only place I can get them.

In my defence, they are more common than dirt and I am taking the ENTIRE colony.

There is nothing wrong with digging up a colony occasionally, we have all done it. ;)

I have before. Also when I was collecting Myrmica rubra queens yesterday one stung me and it's still hurting/itchy.

The queen has started laying eggs again. Hopefully I should know soon what the timing of their life cycle is.

this is a fascinating species to watch. I love how alert they are.

I took a bunch of photos today but I can't seem to work out how to link them. I tried getting help but it was . . unavailable. if anybody wants pictures of these ants try searching for "mathiacus" on imgur. you may or may not find them. :ugone2far:

Those things are awesome looking. I love the alternating colors for every section of their body.
