Queen ID - Dominica Caribbean

Best Answer cpman , July 4 2017 - 5:35 PM

So is it Camponotus species? She's about half an inch long. Isn't she on the small side for that species?

Camponotus is an enormous genus with around a thousand species. It has both smaller and bigger species. Go to the full post

Found her just a little while ago at my work place.

I work in a three story building and there are always loads of queens on the walls from the previous night, as they are attracted by the lights. Presently I counted at least 5 smaller species ant queens and there were two of the type in the pics.

I hope the pictures provided are good enough for an ID. Attached File  new quuen ant.pdf   2.32MB   44 downloads

Camponotus sp. Please don't forget to include measurements. Also, please embed your images instead of using the PDF.

If you've enjoyed using my expertise and identifications, please do not create undue ecological risk by releasing your ants. The environment which we keep our pet insects is alien and oftentimes unsanitary, so ensure that wild populations stay safe by giving your ants the best care you can manage for the rest of their lives, as we must do with any other pet.

Exotic ants are for those who think that vibrant diversity is something you need to pay money to see. It is illegal to transport live ants across state lines.

Black lives still matter.

How do I embed the pics? Been trying to figure out how with no luck. I tried dragging it in here, the pics show up but when I click post nothing happens, or I don't see the post appear after. She's about 1cm.

To embed them, you need to upload your image to a free hosting site (like imgur) and they should provide the link to embed the image.

Isn't this Colobopsis? It kinda looks like she has a truncated head but I might be seeing wrong.

The head is somewhat truncated, but to my eye it isn't truncated enough for Colobopsis sp. The mandibles also don't look quite right for that genus either in my opinion.

There are Camponotus with somewhat truncated heads, so that fits well.

When you upload your pics to imgur, copy the direct link or BBcode link. And paste them to your post.

Thanks again Nathan! That's what I did. Do you have any ideas of what Ant this could be?

You used the wrong link. Here's a screenshot for example.

See the link highlighted in green (Direct link)? Copy that direct link for your images and then paste it in your post.

Doesn't really matter much ayways  :)  As long as we can see it, it's fine. I would agree with Colobopsis for this ant due to the flattened head, but I'm not too aware of the ant fauna of the Caribbean.
