so i realized that there were hundreds in a bush back in june and i decided to raise them.  They were fed fruit flies until the third week, then i switched to crickets. I've been watching them and I've noticed that the success rates are pretty high here.

There is no such genus as "Stagmomantis" in California.

Stagmomantis is a genus consisting of 27 species of mantises native to the Americas. There are 7 species ofStagmomantis native to the United States.

Ah, that explains it.  You didn't mention that they were actually mantis.

What is their adult size?

Actually mantids are very easy to keep I had on once, until I found out it was pregnant...
