I've heard about 3-d printers, but never really got into them, as I never really wanted to 3d print anything.  But after seeing some pictures of people using 3d printers to make plastic pieces/parts for formicariums, that looks like something I'd really be interested in.  I know nothing about them.  Doing some reading here:

It looks like there are basically 3 plastic types that can be used.  Any ideas what the preference would be for making plastic parts to house ants?  Can any 3d printer use any of those 3 plastics, or are printers specific to each one?  Any recommended brands?

Could a 3d printer be used to make essentially an entire formicarium, including clear plastic sheets for the top, for example?

Thanks for any thoughts!

There are many more than just 3 filament types, for example: PLA, ABS, PETG, TPU, PVA and many more. Different plastics obviously have different characteristics.  While you can print translucent filament, it comes out like looking as clear as powdered glass (not very clear). Different printers have restrictions or print different materials well. For starters, PLA is probably the best option. PLA can be used as a formicaria material. I recommend you do a lot of testing before putting your ants in a printed formicaria, because hydration must be well thought out and planned or you could kill the colony nesting inside. Keep in mind, plastic will likely not be the only material you use in the nest, or chances are it will not work correctly.

If you are interested in 3D printing something look around in your local area to see if anyone is running a 3D printing program. In my local area my library offers a program where you can give them the file that you want printed and they charge you for how much plastic it uses. If you are looking for pre-made 3D designs I recommend looking her: https://www.thingiverse.com. If you would like to make your own designs I recommend one of these: https://www.tinkercad.com or http://www.sketchup....for/3D-printing . Now as to respect to the filaments I completely agree with Kevin's post.
