The first colony is approaching a year 1/2 in age, the second is about 8 months old. I meant to start a journal for these guys sooner, but better late than never.

May 22 2017 - I couldn't get a good enough picture of the first colony, but they are doing really well.

These guys seem to be doing good as well, but the nest needs some air flow.

Feb 11 2018 - These guys haven't been hibernated yet, they still have pupae and large piles of brood. They are doing really well.

I noticed some workers are acting as repletes.

What species of Formica is that? It looks sort of like Formica fusca to me.

Cool colony! Formica doesn't overwinter any brood, so if they have brood, let them be, but if they don't have any at some point soon, I would go for hibernation.

Yeah, Formica is cool that way. They let you know when to hibernate them.

A way to tell the difference between Formica Fusca and Formica Subsericea is that Fusca Queens normally have shorter antennae whereas Subserice a Queens normally have longer antennae.
