This site - http://mississippien...icidaehome.html - has the best online, illustrated keys to ants available. They work best for the southeastern quarter of the USA, but can be used beyond that region for the genus keys, at least.

Here are some links about flooding a wild solenopsis invicta nest to collect it.  (I keep forgetting where I found the links, so now I can't miss them)

If you have patience, a pail, baby power, and water you can try collecting a wild colony for a quick start.  (Note this only works on very few species of ants, such as Solenopsis invicta or Linepithema humile).
