What containers did you use to make these?

Container store, called "boxbox" containers if I am not mistaken.

But anything similar will work. You do not need those exact ones. Anything that can stack or see through should be fine.

I'm gonna buy some of these later this week.   Got a lot of colonies coming out of hibernation soon with no where to go.

How do people add the indentations for the test tubes in the grout/hydrostone? I like that idea, but wasn't sure if there's a trick to it that's simple/easy.

Pretty sure you just pour in grout, and stick the test tube in it partially. Probably have to put something in the hole of the test tube to keep the grout from running in the tube.

I wasn't sure if it would stick/get stuck  :)  Thanks!

Yeah, use the test tube to mold the hydrostone or grout. It won't stick to those.

But if you use epoxy, it will stay stuck until the end of time.

Thanks guys for the advice!  Built one last night in a few minutes, and took the tubes out without a problem while the hydrostone was partially set.  Guess I'll be getting an assembly line going soon for these.

How do you feed them if they are a larger colony, without them escaping out of the lid? I crushed one of my Novomessor workers that Derpy got for me from nurbs while opening the lid. Luckily they are doing good now, gonna be at 20 workers really soon.

Haha yeah, I've accidentally done that more than a few times. They are so curious once you open up the lid. One of the "smarter" ants out there. Put them in the fridge for 10 minutes before feeding. It slows them down.

But if you are at 20 workers (good job!), it's time to upgrade to something larger with at least two test tubes. Or get a commercially available formicarium

I had the same concerns too once I finished creating my first one this weekend.  One thing I realized was I poured the hydrostone a bit thick (maybe 1/8-1/4" in depth with variance), but was enough it made the side harder to push in to release the top.  I think for my next iteration, going to use a little less hydrostone and place a strip of plastic/clay around that area to keep it clear of any hydrostone.  Obviously with the boxbox ones posted earlier in the thread, that's not an issue as the top just comes off as not hinged.

Yeah, I made a firebrick formicarium for them, and they are loving it! I moved my C. Modoc colony into it, and I think it works better for Camponotus, as they don't even try to climb when I open the lid.

I can't find these at both stores I looked at. Not on the website either... Anyone know if they have been discontinued?
