Queen caught in Rochester NY USA on 09-20-14

Sidewalk (urban area)
3/8 inches (couldn't find the metric ruler lol)
Completely black, and very shiny
Pointed gaster
No other characteristic I can see

I am thinking that this is a Crematogaster queen.

Definitely Crematogaster queen. Two options are C. cerasi and C. lineolata.

 

Won't be able to really tell the difference until the workers arrive and even then you need a microscope.
