hello, i'm hoping to learn how to identify ant species. what resources can i turn to in order to learn this skill?

Try Alex Wild Photography or antweb. Start by looking at pictures of genera specific to your area.

Try Alex Wild Photography or antweb. Start by looking at pictures of genera specific to your area.

I wouldn't suggest this in the long run. Learning the ant's complicated anatomy to use keys (antwiki) is what you're going to be doing in the long run. Looking at images will help a lot to narrow it down just a bit, but not useful for going down to species, and in many cases not even genus.
