Found some of these while mountain biking today; they looked like queens to me at the time but now I'm not so sure. Especially because of the small thorax. Regardless, I haven't seen this species around here so I'd be interested in knowing a little more about them. Let me know if you need a better picture. Thanks! 

 

Location: Santiago Oaks, Orange County, CA

Date: 4/14

Habitat: Trailside, California coastal hills

Length: 4-5mm

Color: Dark reddish brown/black

I can't exactly pinpoint the species, but these are workers. Sorry.

There are a couple of Formica species in the L.A. area. But these aint them.

Looks like Myrmecocystus sp.
