When I woke up this morning I checked all of the tubes, and saw that 1 queen already had her first nanitic! Once I got home two more queens followed this pattern. So far, the queens each have 1-2 workers. As I am going out of state for the next 10 days, I have frozen some D. hydei (fruit flies) and placed 3 on a piece of tin foil for them to work on while I am gone. I'm also going to give them some cotton balls soaked in Sunburst to drink from (one queen is drinking from the cotton ball as I type this).

Bonus pic- Close up of pupae 2 days ago. You can see that some of them are close to eclosing as their mandibles have darkened. Before they eclose, the entire pupae will appear orange/yellow as opposed to white.

Sweet!!

Can't wait for your update! Nanitics are so adorable. On another note, I will probably do a test tube change when I get back from GA. The mold situation is not intolerable yet (for me, not the ants. they probably don't care) but I think a change would be in order at some point.

Awesome! Having read this I just checked, I got my first nanitic as well. Good news for all us New England winter ant keepers! It only took 74 day :-P!

Queen and nanitic snacking on D. hydei. Taken earlier today (sorry for vertical and dark video) !

Fun fact: I did not freeze the fly prior to serving. The queen just kind of... Killed it with her formic acid spray. I was a bit taken aback by this but it was pretty entertaining
