For christmas I was going to make christmas ants with this species like you did. I was wondering if it was okay to feed them food coloring in their honey water or if it is dangerous.

Two questions. First, have you found any of this sp in the desert in the victorville/phelan area? Also, is it legal to ship ant brood? I was wondering because my colony is in desperate need of brood boosting with 5 workers and 1 larvae so I'm wondering if you had a queen die like in 2016 if you could send me the brood to boost my colony.

Yes, they are found in the desert. Shipping brood is no different than shipping ants. You're asking if I have ant brood from two years ago?

I thought it is just illegal to ship reproductive organisms (ants) in any form. Perfectly legal to ship sterile brood and workers etc. Right? For example, Harvester Ants with those old ant farms.

I probably misread your post... :P

Have fun correcting me!

Aphaenogaster cf. rudis

Tetramorium immigrans

Tapinoma sessile

Formica subsericea

Pheidole sp.

Camponotus nearcticus

The brood can turn into reproductive alates, depending on how they are cared for.

It's funny how every other week someone will round about bring up this topic. We should make a new subforum under sandbox called HEY GUYZ CAN I SHIP ANTZ please HALP!?! and just let everyone have at it.

I almost didn't want to even answer his question. I am not having my journal turn into the 30th thread about shipping ants. Take it somewhere else.

I make them. The bottom is sand coated resin.

Do these girls not like heat that much?

Of course they like heat; that's why they're found in the desert.

Why do you put the plug with the hole. I have seen many ant keepers do this, but I always wondered why?

I'm not sure what you are asking about.

It makes the ants feel more safe in their tube, as in the wild their nest entrance is much smaller than the opening of a test tube. Also, it keeps the humidity higher in the tube by reducing the amount of moisture that can escape. Humidity is crucial for Acromyrmex's fungus.

Update 12-3-2018

All of my C. fragilis colonies are doing great and growing fast. My largest colony is now up to around 200 workers. Some of my new colonies even have a few majors already.
