How do you make the sand resin, or whatever is at the bottom of the starter formicariums?

 

Pour resin, then pour sand.

I only have one large colony of these now, and it's doing great. I counted about 500 or so workers.

 

 

have you been controlling the population on this colony? I'm confused how you are only at 500 workers.  had 200+ workers first yea and now I'm entering their second season , i got her last summer 2019 with no workers just brood. we are entering spring of 2020 and the colony is 350+ workers with another 100 brood in progress. i estimate ill be at 1000 by the end of the summer.  I'm just trying to find out if you bound your colonies size by only feeding them less.

Comparing 1:1 doesn't mean anything, you need more samples. You can get a queen that produces 500 workers in the first season, and a queen that may only produce 100, when both colonies are given equal care. There are lots of variables.

 

If your colony is growing fast, congratulations. You got a good queen and you are a good antkeeper. Nothing for you to be confused about.

It varies by species. A lot of Camponotus can reach 50,000 and above.

If I remember correctly, C. pennsylvanicus colonies can contain 40,000 workers.

This colony is still doing great and has about 600 workers now.

About 2 months ago I had noticed the queen was missing. I still have the colony and they are actually still producing a lot, but they are all males of course.

 

Even though they have been hard to find this season, I did find a few of these queens about a month ago, and so I will probably have another large colony of them.
