I live in northern Florida almost lower Alabama, and I found and caught this queen ant. I live near the water, and I found it on a hot, windy day it rained the day after I caught it.  Sorry about the picture quality I cannot afford a macro camera I was using a 35mm which I had already. The queen is about 3cm long

1. that's quite large for a queen so you might want to check again

2. any distinguishing characteristics?

I don't think so. The measurements definitely need checking for a proper ID.

The colours and shape match Camponotus snellingi, maybe C. caryae but 35mm is 3.5cm, or nearly 1.4 inches. That's as large as the largest bullet ant.

Sorry to be off topic but I live in Alabama! Wanna meet up sometime? Also, it is a Camponotus species. We will need better pics for a more accurate IS

Might be Camponotus socius if indeed 15mm.
