Here are a few pics of the new guys, they eat quite well:
And yes I know your not supposed to handle them, but it was only for like 3 seconds, and they aren't too annoyed by it, they just chill.
Nice. Males or females?
Did you buy these or did you find them?
Dang those are some big fat sals. I wonder if we have anything that big in my region.
-Goes to flip more logs-
Yeah Mercutia, yours looks a lot like some of the "slim salamanders" we have around here. They aren't fat like his.
These guys [don't know the gender] are fairly small for this species, I've seen huge ones twice this size before, they are doing well.
I found them in the basement, as greg has stated.
Hopefully they grow to their maximum length of 13 or 14 inches which is over a foot!
They have been feeding on worms [from my worm bin ], mealies, slugs [that I've had for awhile now, probably 2nd generation]. I only feed them every couple of days because I don't want them to get obese.
if you gave them a cricket would they eat it ?
They would, but I said no darn crickets in this house, I hate the damn things, stinky and noisy.
lol
do they bite ?
Crickets or the Salamanders?
The Salamanders will try to eat your fingers if you move them around their face, but they don't have teeth.
sounds intimidating
It doesn't hurt they just snap at you, I think it's funny!
I caught a salamander back in early Spring that actually did have teeth and would draw blood if it bit you. It was killed by my newts unfortunately.
It was one of these.
Not my picture.
That sucks, on both ends. I am surprised they are doing so well. lol my spellchecker said surprised was suppressed .
I'm not getting one of those... that looks like a baby alligator ready to kill
My sal doesn't have any teeth. For some reason I think it's really cute when animals are fatter and rounder. Slim is nice like my Red Back Sal but the fat ones are just so gosh darned cute.
And dayyyummmm those get big! The biggest I can hope for from my sal is 12cm ~ 4-5 inches. I would love to keep a sal that big. Probably easier to find food for them because they are nice and big and will eat just about anything they can fit in their mouths.
lol
do they bite ?
Crickets BTW will bite like crazy sometimes. You have to be careful about leaving them in a cage with your pet, because they will sometimes chew on them while they're sleeping. I have had them bite the hell out of my hand before while holding a few. I think it's mainly the males that bite the most.
I only hand feed, so I know they eat.
Alza, your over-reacting, they can't hurt you in fact we do more harm to them.
