[Mercutia]

So I went on a romantic anting walk with my boyfriend as we wandered around my local woodlot lifting the odd log to see if there were any queens around and low and behold, we found this lovely critter.

 

 

It's an Eastern Red Backed Salamander, ~ less than 10 cm from head to tail.

 

I've got her (I'm assuming its a her because of the lack of testes) in a small terrarium currently. I've looked up basic care and such but if anyone else has any rearing tips, they would be much appreciated!

 

Edit: We've named him/her Natsu after the Salamander wizard in the anime Fairy Tail.

Cool, I like salamanders and newts. This looks like a good care sheet (http://jabberwockrep...salamander-care). Looks like they make decent pets.

All these guides keep telling me to feed my salamander crickets, etc but she's so gosh darned small there is no way crickets are going to fit in her teeny tiny mouth. Any other suggestions?

Haha, you need tiny crickets. When they first catch they're as small as S. molesta ants.

Do they sell feeder crickets that small?

Nope, you can try fruitflies maybe if they sell them there?

Yes, they sell all sizes of feeder crickets. Although anything under 1/4" or two week size crickets generally have to be pre ordered from a store, as they generally don't stock that size. Flightless fruitflies would work as well.

At Highlands Biological Station they were (and perhaps still are) maintaining a large experimental population on flightless fruit flies.
