What do female and male alates do when it is not their nuptial flight season

I was wondering this a lot so,I want to know what alates do when they are not flying?(before their nuptial flight season starts).Do they act as workers or they are just lying around

Take up space and food. That's pretty much everything. They're not doing anything useful.
