Just thought I'd show the nest entrances to some of the wild ant colonies that are at my house.

Trachymyrmex septentrionalis

Pogonomyrmex badius

The sand piles of these will be a lot larger in the summer.

Odontomachus brunneus

(Both nests are at the bases of trees)

Dorymyrmex bureni

Pheidole obscurithorax

The sand piles of this species usually look more like Trachymyrmex or Dorymyrmex and are larger, but I couldn't find any good ones today.

Pheidole dentata

The nest entrance is to the right, underneath the leaves.

Pheidole bicarinata

These nests are absolutely tiny, but they are everywhere.

Psuedomyrmex gracilis

Solenopsis invicta

This is one colony. The nest is several feet long, and is not the usual mound that these colonies make.

Nice pictures. That Trachymyrmex mound looks a lot like Acromyrmex.
