It looks like a cocoon of some kind for a moth or butterfly

It looks like a cocoon of some kind for a moth or butterfly

It is a moth cocoon. I hatched these before. I don't know what species though.

It looks like it is ok. Just leave it in an enclosed container with some leaf littler. TC might have worked with this before, so be sure to ask him.

Looks kind of like a achemon sphinx moth, cocoon. Seems like it would be right considering the location. Where did you find it?

It could be almost any Sphingidae on that matter because it's so elongated. Of course Acheson is a possibility but there are tens or even hundreds of sphinx moth species here

In my garage behind some boxes. Just stumbled upon it while doing some spring cleaning.

I agree it is a sphingid pupa of some sort, size alone pretty much assures that.

Well location wouldn't narrow it down that much. There's tons of sphinx moth species, and many have very broad ranges.

Alright, thanks guys! I'll post an update once it pops out. Hopefully soon. I read the need something to hang on and enough space to spread their wings. Anything else?

How much space might this thing need? I can never tell from pictures.
