It looks like it is ok. Just leave it in an enclosed container with some leaf littler. TC might have worked with this before, so be sure to ask him.

Looks kind of like a achemon sphinx moth, cocoon. Seems like it would be right considering the location. Where did you find it?
In my garage behind some boxes. Just stumbled upon it while doing some spring cleaning.
I agree it is a sphingid pupa of some sort, size alone pretty much assures that.
Well location wouldn't narrow it down that much. There's tons of sphinx moth species, and many have very broad ranges.
