Species: camponotus nearcticus

 

Location found: In a rotten log on a nature trail ~2 miles from my house

 

Age of colony: 1-2 years old

 

Workers/nanitics: 25

 

Majors: 2

My rarest colony. I have found a solo queen of this species aswell as 1 more colony. I gave both of those to a good friend of mine. These are like tiny Camponotus pennsylvanicus but far more aggressive and they also seem to not mind light. I will say they love to make the tunnels smaller by filling with debris like tetramorium. Currently they arent really foraging due to have no larvae, as you can see they have a massive pile of pupae and some eggs. Hopefully with the worker explosion that's about to happen they will become alot more active.

small update: my god... these girls are monsters!! see the brood pile in the top pic? times that by 3-5 and you have what they are up to now. the queen must be laying at least several times a week.

I think it would help if the title for your journals included the species name.


If you've enjoyed using my expertise and identifications, please do not create undue ecological risk by releasing your ants. The environment which we keep our pet insects is alien and oftentimes unsanitary, so ensure that wild populations stay safe by giving your ants the best care you can manage for the rest of their lives, as we must do with any other pet.

 

Exotic ants are for those who think that vibrant diversity is something you need to pay money to see. It is illegal to transport live ants across state lines.
