A black Camponotus sp... I'll let expert on the ants of California go further.
What leads you to believe this is different than the C. quercicolas?

Nurbs said it was a different species at the time-- not quercicolas (laevigatus? I can't remember which he said)
It's also a good 3mm shorter

It had some red in it. Looked like C. vicinus. Can you take an undershot of the belly?
EDIT: Also high pilosoty in head. C. quercicola are nearly bald except for a few strands on the top.

Yeah need a better lit shot, but I am sure this is not C. quercicola.
It's actually a great find because it's not anything else like what we found that night.

More pictures! I see golden hairs but I don't know if it's because of the quality of the light or not
That red that nurbs pointed out is there, just hard to get on camera
This looks like C. vicinus! They also have golden hairs. I usually collect a ton of these every year high up in the mountains of Azusa. Interesting that they are also found in the lower elevations, just less common.
Here is one I sold last year. Her gastor is plump with food and eggs, but when it is not that swollen she appears darker like yours.
