Today I was out anting, as you do and I found what looked like dorymyrmex insanus

 

So I scooped her up in a test tube and plugged it up and went on my way

 

But when I pulled her out later she'd drowned!

 

GUYS

 

MAKE SURE YOUR TEST TUBES ARE COMPLETELY DRY BEFORE YOU PUT ANTS IN THEM

 

it was involuntary ant slaughter but I still felt really bad. we take care of these ants and they depend on us for their livelihood-- neglect is no excuse :(

 

just a cautionary tale for you all

Dry her out, ants don't usually "drown" they die of stress or pass out essentially, and it can take a few days for her to wake up.

I don't capture my queens in the containers I plan to keep them. They will do fine without water until you get home later. Vibrations from walking can knock wet cotton loose.

If you've enjoyed using my expertise and identifications, please do not create undue ecological risk by releasing your ants. The environment which we keep our pet insects is alien and oftentimes unsanitary, so ensure that wild populations stay safe by giving your ants the best care you can manage for the rest of their lives, as we must do with any other pet.

 

Exotic ants are for those who think that vibrant diversity is something you need to pay money to see. It is illegal to transport live ants across state lines.

Yeah, I don't know why people walk around with water-filled glass test tubes in their pockets. Simple plastic snap-cap containers work just fine. When you take test tube setups into the mountains, you risk a flood because of the pressure difference. If you do take them higher in elevation, make sure there no air bubbles in them.

I almost drowned so many ants it isn't funny. First a Camponotus worker in sugar water, and a Prenolepis queen in oil (don't ask how it happened). Both woke up after a few hours after I dried them off.

I've personally kept ants in snap cap vials for over 8 hours (I found them on the way to work, and they had to wait until I got back home). Many had laid eggs, and absolutely none were dead with no water supplied during the entire shift. So i highly recommend not carrying around full test tubes either, but rather some small collection vials.

 

However that is very sad to hear.

How the mug did she drown? And if she did drown how do you not notice the droplets/puddle
