So today I revisited the hill and wow they were busy...
They were either raiding another colony or cleaning out a nest that didn't make it through the winter as the workers constantly carried in dead ants for hours (but no brood):
I gave them some sugar water and they liked it:
There also was another colony (actually there was a colony like every 5 meters) who took the "wood ant" thing quite literally:
