They are almost certainly climbing up the tree so that they can tend to aphids or scale insects living on the tree.

When I visited the Florida keys last year Pheidole megacephala were everywhere. I followed a trail back to a tree, and tore open the tree a bit to see plenty of majors, alates, brood, and workers. This tree was quite soft, and the ground seemed to be controlled primarily by Brachymyrmex, so this may have influenced it.

Currently Keeping:
Trachymyrmex septentrionalis

Pheidole pilifera

Forelius sp. (Monogynous, bicolored) "Midwestern Forelius"
Crematogaster cerasi

Pheidole bicarinata

Aphaenogaster rudis

Camponotus chromaiodes

Formica sp. (microgena species)

Nylanderia cf. arenivega

Suggestions:

  1. Boiling hot water has always killed RIFA ant nests for me. I boil a huge pot of water, then pour it right onto the top of the mound making sure to get all the dirt wet. Never once had a colony come back from it. Sometimes I make 2 batches if they seem to have a large colony.
  2. Borax + honey/sugar water = win. Kills whole colony. Borax IS toxic; just don't feed it to your animals or eat it yourself. Most effective method. depending on how many queens, may have to apply it a few times in different spots.
  3. Diatomaceous Earth

Soapy water only kills by suffocation, so typically only get some ants, and it doesn't last long.

I'll also no longer give regular updates on number of colonies. Each month I might post if they happen to get more, but since they are expanding so fast I don't want to keep posting about it. I'll post however if something major happens, or they take over a large Argentine ant colony. I don't think there are many of those where they can immediately expand to though.

i like this idea.
