I got this Formica colony from antguy a while back, but I never thought to make a journal for the species. They are fun to keep and also very unpredictable. I'm not sure how large the colony will grow, but I know they can get pretty big. Right now, they're nested in a mini hybrid nest from AntsCanada that I got for free. I was worried they weren't getting enough protein these last few days, so I dropped some meat inside their outworld. Interestingly, I only saw them take it back to their nest today, after it had already dried up. Then, they started rehydrating the meat with the hummingbird nectar I was feeding it. That's why it's all red  Maybe they just like red meat?

Here's a video. Sorry if I seem to be moving the camera around too fast. I'll try to keep it in one place next time.

I also have a few pictures from some days ago.

They're supposed to, but they just decided to stop. I even gave them substrate, but it's possible that they just need a sand surface in order to make cocoons. I mean like it doesn't really matter for me since it's less energy for these ants to worry about. It's also interesting cuz they used to spin cocoons but just stopped recently. (Same conditions)

So... I fed them fruit flies 3 months ago. They never got around to eating them all apparently, because now the workers have started to feast on some   B)
