Very interesting. I wonder if the same hormone can be applied to the tribe Pheidole belong to.
It seems you can actually trigger this by feeding them tons of high quality protein. Sounds worth a try. Any volunteers with Pheidole colonies?

We should respect all forms of consciousness. The body is just a vessel, a mere hull.

Shove a bunch of mealies? I do have about 12 major larvae.

I may try something like this with my Pheidole colony when the workers arrive.

I don't think mealworms are nutritious enough.

What is this particular definition of "high-quality protein?" Any insect should have the amino acid balance that ants need, leaving fat and vitamin/mineral content (which has some dependency on the diet of the feeders.)
I fear that the AntsCanada video on ant diets has spread some misinformation, perhaps read from the context of nutrition for vertebrates.
Insect fats are likely of greater or equal value to captive ants as their sugar diet, considering antioxidants and the otherwise low-vitamin, unvaried diets which most beginner hobbyists provide. If you are looking for lean protein, then go for flies or any similar adult insects evolved for a life in the sky.

If you've enjoyed using my expertise and identifications, please do not create undue ecological risk by releasing your ants. The environment which we keep our pet insects is alien and oftentimes unsanitary, so ensure that wild populations stay safe by giving your ants the best care you can manage for the rest of their lives, as we must do with any other pet.
Exotic ants are for those who think that vibrant diversity is something you need to pay money to see. It is illegal to transport live ants across state lines.

mealworms are some of the least nutritious foods. You cnnot really sustain a well colony solely on mealworms

Not unless you gut load them like I do. Cabbage, Lettuce, Apple, Carrot, Radish, and Strawberries will give you perfect mealies. I also have a farm of crickets and worker termites.
