Hello!

I would like to tell about my web service antsgeo (link: https://antsgeo.github.io).
Some time ago, got the idea to create a web service where antkeepers can tell you about the accurate location of ants species, and this information visualize on the world map. In the concept, service antsgeo must perform two main functions, receive information from antkeepers (to database) and give this information (from database) into map. The service consists of panel controls and map, on the map shows markers, with species an ant, comment, time and location, in the panel controls there is buttons which are responsible for certain actions.
The main mission antsgeo - collection data about location of ants from myrmecologists and visualize it on the world map.
Antsgeo can be useful for myrmecologists, which the study of ants, and for ant keepers interested in ants.

For what else purposes can be useful antsgeo?
  • For searching queen of near your location
  • For searching ants which interested you
  • For their purposes

How to add information?
I tried to make a easy, quick and intuitive populate the fields for adding data, so adding information in the database antsgeo very simple, need click on place on the map, then fill out the small form, where there are two necessary fields. The first it is the name species ant, the second it is the comment.
In field comment you can write the landmark where exactly is colony or other useful information. Other requiered fields (time, coordinates) completes the service.
I tried to made detailed instructions (with images) for using this service, it is in the tab "help".

Some time ago i told my russian colleagues about this service, and they already added about 170 markers, so already there is small statistics of distribution of the ants in western Russia :)

If you have any questions, write in the comments, I'm will try to answer all questions (my english language is not good :( )!
Thanks!

I see a potential issue, the fact that you can write whatever you want as a species. I suggest a pre-selected species list.

Thank Kevin, good idea! I considered this problem about spam's in the information, but where to get the list with all species of ants :) So i temporarily settled on the manual control of data, in the near future I'm going to do checking for the species field

I feel like it would be more succsessful if you had a little cookie that tells you some ant keepers who are nearby/local.

Antmaps.org is a good source. I'm sure there are big lists somewhere. You could ask drew for a list from his mating chart, but I don't think that has every species.

Can try to ask antmaps.org to give list all ants in the database antmaps, good idea :)

I also think this can slightly be ineffective unless exact locations are shown. You should make a app for members to easily mark a location in-field. That would bring this to a more useful level, but it would need time to grow.

I think this should be pretty useful because sometimes a certain species isn't in your specificarea. For example, in my case Aphaenogaster are almost non-existent in my specific area.

It is not possible :( I wanted to realize it, and started doing this function, but geolocation on the phones is very inaccurate. +- 5m, and this is the best. If phones would have antenna, it would be possible doing it

Is it ok to only write the genus if unsure of the species? For Example Formica sp., or the species group like Formica fusca-group sp.

Yes, it is ok, but it is better to write cf. in the species if you have assume. For example lasius cf. claviger. If haven't assume, can write sp  (y)

Would be nice to be able to search the location so I can easily find the place that I want to place the marker.

You can open the antmaps.org website html and take all the genus, and let people decide the sp. (they can write Lasius niger, Lasius cf. niger, Lasius sp.) just hope that no one will place things like "Lasius lol idk" or "Lasius is this an ant?". You could fix it placing a report button on the tags so you can remove it if the name is inappropriate.

Good idea. There will probably be quite a few names like that because of the freedom of typing whatever you want.

I'm already thinking how to implement it, about cf. sp. Good idea about report button! Thanks, too will think how to implement it
