Just ordered 5 glass test tubes (18*150mm) for 3 euros

1)Do you think this size is ok for all the species?

2)What size of test tubes do you recommend and why?

Thanks for your time :D

If my ant colonies queen can turn around in the test tube comfortably, then I don't give it a second thought.

There is no size for all species, but the general standard is 16mm diameter and 125mm-150mm length.

Agreed.  That's my standard too.

I ordered a mix of 16mm (some came 17mm which was annoying when using it with 3D printed designs), and 13mm.    The 13x100mm I used for some of the really small ants like Temnothorax, but they dry out noticeably faster than the 16mmx150.  Probably stick with the 16x150mm here.  I accidentally ended up with 1000 borosilicate 16x150mm from Amazon Prime for $38.  1:50 comes broken... yet still a life time supply :P   Guessing I'll be giving them away as party gifts to other members.

EDIT:  Looking on Amazon, I am guessing I ended up with a pricing goof this summer, as that same 1000 are now $135.

1) I think 18mm is too large for some species, tapinoma, lasius, and other very small ants.

2) I recommend having both 13mm and 16mm tubes, 13mm for the super smalls and 16mm for the rest.  Unless you live in a area where there are very large queens, 16mm tubes are large enough for even chunky Camponotus queens to turn around in.  How long they are is up to you, however I would not go under 100mm, I try to stay at 125 or 150mm in length.

16mm test tubes will also work for Messor species ants.

I am pretty sure most nests use 16mm.
