Those ants were a small species. Too small for me I'm afraid. :)

This Leptomyrmex darlingtoni nest looks like it came straight out of a J.R.R.Tolkien fantasy novel.

leptomyrmex darlingtoni
What a home.

There really is another universe hiding within our own.

Sometimes I ponder the smaller civilizations.

It seems to me that there is always a smaller organism.

If there is always a smaller and smaller civilization.

Could it be said that there are also civilizations bigger and bigger?

Hope this doesn't keep you up at night. :)

No I have always thought about how cool it was too :)

I think my chickens have eaten all of the ants in the yard.  I need to go to the park and look I think :/

The chickens are wiping out my little civilizations lol

Chickens have a crazy ability to detect the smallest movements under the surface of the soil. :)

Here's another Leptomyrmex nest with an entrance protected by a sturdy log.

Obvious nest 1
I've seen a few male alates that I believe belong to this species flying around lately.
Obvious nest 2
Couple of guards on duty and workers moving fresh soil.
Obvious nest 3

I love trap jaw ants. I would have to move further north if I wanted to find one here.

I am in S.E. Qld near you and we get the false trapjaw ants around us. I have seen Anochetus graeffei on my property.

Here in Florida you can find them in the afternoon at 7 or 6 PM. Surprised you find them during school hours…

Is that the start of the ant nest pictures thread?

Good thing Alabama and Florida has invasive Trap Jaws :)

Good luck finding native Odontomachus ;)

No offense, but they don’t seem fun to keep.

They are interesting, and they rarely sting. They do get boring sometimes though, so, I understand why some wouldn’t want them.
