Hello, I am open to any suggestions as I am in the market for a good camera. I'll be taking pics and video of my colonies for fun but also to share journals and experiences here. Best direction so far was for Nikon Macro... unfortunately this will be my first camera and I do understand the price point or range is anywhere from $300 to over $1,000.

Help is appreciated :)

Moved to General Off-Topic.

There are a lot of ways to improvise better macro. You might want to look into extension tubes or lens reversing (if you already have a camera with interchangeable lenses) or lens coupling for anything else. You can take any cheapo camera and couple a lens onto it to get some impressive results. Here is a very amateur video I made by attaching an old lens to a $100 camera (with rubber bands.):

I probably would have gotten better results if I used better lighting or was better at editing. If I recall, I was also using a low-quality setting because I was unfamiliar with the camera. I have to admit, though, the way I cut this video was really on point! :D

Oh, and for scale, these workers are about 3.5mm long

If you've enjoyed using my expertise and identifications, please do not create undue ecological risk by releasing your ants. The environment which we keep our pet insects is alien and oftentimes unsanitary, so ensure that wild populations stay safe by giving your ants the best care you can manage for the rest of their lives, as we must do with any other pet.

Exotic ants are for those who think that vibrant diversity is something you need to pay money to see. It is illegal to transport live ants across state lines.

Use an Olloclip for iPhone. It works pretty well on small ants.

Expensive though... like $100 for a set.
