Thanks Terry. Honestly when I started reading this I thought Mikey had some strong opinions on the folks harassing women in the gaming community. But honestly, I like this forum because, while Drew does sell stuff, this doesn't appear to be his primary source of income. But he also provides a means for others sell here if they want. And he seems to only censor folks for very explicit reasons.

What urks me the most is that Antscanada claims to want to advance ant keeping as much as possible but yet they don't allow other vendors to even be mentioned on their forum, the mention of other forums on their forum, etc. And yet these are all things that would very much advance the hobby. They seem to only want to advance Antscanada ant keeping.

Mikey removing posts about products made by rival companies from his forum and facebook group is just good business. Sure it looks like a [censored] move but you don't eat Burger King in a McDonalds. It just isn't done. He's not paying people to maintain and moderate his forums and groups so they can talk about NOT buying his stuff. It's arguably off topic even. 

 

Secondly anyone who goes to the Gamer Gate website could be forgiven for assuming they sell ants. Their website looks like just abut any other Ant Supply Vendor out there, and their promotion of the article saying they have a license to export ants leaves many to assume they're actually in the black market trade stripping Australia of its natural wonders.

Some legitimate criticisms there. Gamergate arguably should have done a better job communicating their intent and sending out trial balloons to gauge community reactions prior to the announcement.

That said, the blowback and overreaction to the announcement does seem like a totally disproportionate response, to me, and I would guess many in the community. Live and learn, I guess.

That's not necessarily true. There's actually plenty very large, very successful companies who have user support forums where you can basically trash the company and tell everyone to buy a competing product, and still not have your posts removed. Maybe for companies as small as AntsCanada, it might do more harm than good to not censor the posts... I don't know.

I've linked to Formiculture and other antkeeping forums several times in the AC forums and none of my posts got removed so far.
