I need a id for a worker i found this is a common species i have just never gotten around to asking for an id

I found it right in the middle of an argentine ant trail and it was not being attacked exept for a few workers who gave it a small bite then kept going.

It is a bit over half the size of an argentine ant and is common but i only see 1 or 2 workers at a time also has a dull redish color and moves very smoothly in a way most ants don't and has no castes.I know this is a VERY incomplete description but this is the only other ant i find in the city other than argentine ants so there are not that many other ants there so it should be easy to id.

SoCal has some of the most ant diversity in the country, so you might want to look in different places if you are just finding Linepithema. An ID cannot be made, based off of this description. All ants have castes, but I assume you mean that the workers are monomorphic (there are no majors).

If you've enjoyed using my expertise and identifications, please do not create undue ecological risk by releasing your ants. The environment which we keep our pet insects is alien and oftentimes unsanitary, so ensure that wild populations stay safe by giving your ants the best care you can manage for the rest of their lives, as we must do with any other pet.

Exotic ants are for those who think that vibrant diversity is something you need to pay money to see. It is illegal to transport live ants across state lines.

Does it looks like these?

Prenolepis_imparis%2C_Cambridge%2C_Massa

Prenolepis_imparis%2C_Stow%2C_Massachuse

Prenolepis_imparis_on_Bur_cucumber%2C_Fr

That's Prenolepis imparis (winter ants/false honey pots). It's the first thing that came into my mind that can deal with invicta and argentines, has only has very few workers out during summer and moves in a very own smooth way.

Although, I guess there is Lasius californicus. We still need the whole standard rundown to identify your ant.

They're all the same species (all pictures).

That's not Lasius claviger, it's Prenolepis imparis (winter ants). It was the first thing that came into my mind that can deal with invicta and argentines and only has very few workers out during summer.

The queen at the top is Lasius claviger. http://bugguide.net/...w/373790/bgpage

The queen second down looks like Temnothorax -- definitely not Prenolepis imparis.

You gotta use keys and descriptions with a picture of the ant or the ant itself. This other person could have misidentified their ants or you could be misremembering what the ant looked like.

Monomorium is not reddish brown. If it resembles Monomorium but is reddish brown look at Cardiocondyla mauritanica.
