So I have a colony of what is believed to be technomyrmex jocosus and there is about 14 workers just hanging around in the tube leading to the outworld. Why are they doing that?

I would say they are guarding the nests.

It could be them guarding the entrance or it could just be a hangout spot. Anyway this is nothing unusual.

This is common. The ants are making sure everyone passing belongs to the colony.
