Location:  O'Neill Regional Park, Orange County, California.
Habitat:  Open dirt area in an oak forest.
Coloration, hue and pattern:  Red head and thorax, black gaster.
Length:  3.5mm.
Distinguishing characteristics:  Spine-like point on its back.

My guess is Dorymyrmex bicolor.
