I found 2 Camponotus nearcticus colonies yesterday. One is very big, probably 70-100 workers. The other is quite small, and has 20-30 workers.

I didn't know what species these were at first, because the queen was so tiny! She was only 2-3mm thick and 1cm long! That's very small to the other Camponotus I've found.

 

I could tell these guys were ready for hibernation. They were hardly moving at all, and I found tons of them nestled in the cracks of the branches I found them in.

 

Here's the large colony, still in a collection vial. I've made formicaria for both of these colonies, and I'm letting them fully cure right now.

 

 

 

 

 

And the small colony...

 

 

These colonies will be in hibernation as soon as a get them in formicaria.
